Game Blue Thunder

Welcome to the future Blue Thunder pilot.

The Blue Thunder is a highly efficient and easy to pilot aircraft, utilising the most advanced technology of our time and easily upgradable with future technologies.
Using a single Power Cell to provide power to the Shield and Weapons Generation System, the power cell is configurable to allow for a more powerful shield, or if you prefer a faster Weapons Generation System.
The Shield is constantly replenished as long as sufficient power is available from the Power Cell.
The Weapons Generation System creates missiles from compressed atomic matter, the speed of this process is dependant on how much power is available from the Power Cell.

The Blue Thunder team was formed by two highly skilled mercenary fighter pilots, Dion and Rika. You have known them a long time and eager to test your combat skills you have accepted their offer to become the 3rd member of the Blue Thunder team.

Weapons

4.1 Laser
Standard 2-beam laser, useful at close range on air and surface targets, or while waiting for the W.G.S. to generate more missiles.

4.2 Surface Missiles (Homing)
When this weapon is selected, a red lock-on cursor will appear on any enemy surface targets in view, click the fire button to launch the missile only when there is a locked-on target.

4.3 Air Missiles (Homing)
These missiles operate similar to Surface Missiles except there must be a lock-on cursor on an enemy aircraft. If your Blue Thunder is on the receiving end, a warning will flash above the shield bar (Bottom Left) indicating the number of missiles currently tracking you.

Switching on your max shield (Middle Mouse button or the Down Cursor key) will reduce the damage done by any missile impact however while the max shield is active, power to Shield and W.G.S. is reduced by 50%.
Clever low-flying over the ground is a good way to shake off incoming missiles.

Team Members

With you on your missions are Dion and Rika, their location will be indicated by a green blip on the radar (Bottom Right), enemies will be marked with a red blip.

Dion - (Starting Rank ++)
The first pilot to fly a Blue Thunder. Like his sister Rika, Dion is a skilled fighter pilot. Prefers surface combat.

Rika - (Starting Rank ++)
With her newly upgraded Alpha missiles, Rika likes fast air combat.

During the course of you mission Dion and Rika will communicate to you via the message system. Any messages will appear at the bottom of the screen. When Dion or Rika come into view a friendly white lock-on cursor will appear giving you their Shield & Rank information, so you can provide help if they get into trouble.

Power Cell

The Blue Thunder uses a single Power Cell to provide power to the Shield and W.G.S. (Weapon Generation System), the Power Cell is configurable to allow for a faster replenishing shield, or if you prefer a faster W.G.S.
The F11 and F12 keys control the % of power to the Shield and W.G.S., these can be adjusted at any time during the game.

Getting the balance between Shield and W.G.S. is important during combat. For example if you were to have 100% of the Power going into the Shield system you would soon be out of missiles to use.

Shield System

The Shield is constantly replenished as long as sufficient power is available from the Power Cell.
The blue bar next to the shield display (Bottom left) is the current % of power going into the Shield system. The green bar to the left indicates the completion state for the current Shield repair work.

W.G.S. - Weapons Generation System

The W.G.S. creates missiles (Air & Surface) from compressed atomic matter, the speed of this process is dependant on how much power is available from the Power Cell.

The blue bar next to the current weapon icon (Bottom middle) is the current % of power going into the W.G.S. The green bar to the left indicates the completion state for the current ammunition round.

Note : While the max shield is active, power to Shield and W.G.S. is reduced by 50%.

Lock-On Cursors & Ranking

When you start a new game, you are ranked as a "Beginner", other pilots will have higher ranks than you (1 or 2 Crosses for the first mission). When you lock-on to an enemy or a friendly aircraft is in your view, the lock-on will display the pilots name, their current shield bar and their Rank. Making it easy to see if a team mate is in trouble or for enemies, letting you hunt down the weakest. Or the strongest if your feeling up to it.

The higher the Rank of your target the more money you get for destroying it. Any money earned from missions can be used to upgrade your Blue Thunder.

The Blue Thunder icon next to the shield bar is your early incoming missile warning. When a red lock-on cursor flashes over this icon, an enemy has a lock on your Blue Thunder but has not fired any missiles yet. At this point its best to do some clever flying and get the enemy of your tail.
When your attacked, a Red arrow will be displayed above the attacking enemy, making it easy to take action when there are several enemies around you.

Upgrades

At the end of a mission you will receive payment for the aircraft you shot down and surface targets destroyed/protected, this money can be used to buy upgrades, as you progress through the game, new upgrades will become available to buy.

When you have selected the upgrade you want to buy, you will be offered money for the previous upgrade part already installed in your Blue Thunder.

Message System

During the course of a mission, messages will be comunicated via the message box at the bottom of the screen.
The colour of this box indicates if an enemy (Red)/team member (Green) sent the message. The name of the sender appears along with their current shield bar to the left.
If the sender has been shot down, the name of the person that gets the frag will appear below the empty shield bar.

Assistance can be request by pressing 'H'. Any available team member will respond via the message box and go after any aircraft attacking you, however this may put the team member in danger if they have to brake of from attacking a different enemy.

The current status of your team members can be requested by pressing 'D' (Dion) or 'R' (Rika), they will respond via the message box allowing you to see their current shield bar.

Options

Use the cursor keys to adjust the options on this menu and select Accept Changes after you have made any changes on the graphics menu.

Direct 3D Driver
The game will automatically select the primary display device (if it has hardware acceleration) the first time the game is played. However if your 3D card is the secondary display card (such as voodoo 1 & 2) you may need to change this setting if the game is running slowly.

3D cards with hardware T&L (like the Geforce 256), will also have to change this setting to the T&L driver for best performance.

Resolution

You should check your monitor can support the resolution before you make any changes to this, most monitors & Direct 3D graphics cards support a minimum of 640 x 480. If the resolution is not supported the resolution with default to 640x480 at 16-bit colour.

Supported Resolutions
640 x 480, 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1280 x 1024, 1600 x 1200

Colour Bit Depth
Most Direct 3D cards support 16-bit colour, however some (like voodoo 5500 & Geforce 256) support 32-bit colour rendering which greatly enhances the graphical detail. If the colour depth is not supported the resolution will default to 640x480 at 16-bit colour.

Supported Colour Depths
16-bit, 24-bit, 32-bit

Detail
Dpending on the speed of your machine, this setting can be changed to improve draw distance detail or framerate.

Texture Filter
This setting controls the filtering used on textures (Anisotropic should work on Geforce 256 cards).

MipMap Filter
This setting controls the filtering used on mipmaps, Point Sampled offers better performance but less image quality. Linear filtering offers better image quality but can be very slow on some Direct 3D cards.

Depth Buffer
If your Direct 3D video card supports W-buffering (such as Voodoo 1/2/3/5500) you can enable it with this setting for enhanced hidden surface removal. For other cards (Geforce 256) this setting should be left as Z-buffer.

Depth Buffer Bit Depth
Most Direct 3D cards support 16-bit depth buffers, however some (like voodoo 5500 & Geforce 256) support 24-bit depths which enhances hidden surface removal. If the depth buffer bit depth is not supported Blue Thunder will revert to the default 16-bit.

Supported Depth Buffer Bit Depths
16-bit, 24-bit, 32-bit

Accept Changes
Select this when you have changed any settings on the graphics menu. If the resolution settings are incorrect, you can press Escape to reset to 640x480.

If the Direct 3D driver is changed and is not compatible, the game will Quit back to the desktop. If this happens load the game again and the previous Driver setting will be restored.

Sound
Turn the sound effects on/off.

Currency
